OCTOBER 10 WORLD AGAINST DEATH PENALTY DAY

October 10th World Day Against Death Penalty.

Today, October 10th Marks the World Against Death Penalty Day. Despite the progress that has been made world wide in abolishing the death penalty, capital punishment still exist in some countries such as Iran , Pakistan and Saudi Arabia. Often the death penalty is given to non violent offences and to those who are minors.

One such country, Saudi Arabia has one of the highest execution rates in the world. The majority of the death sentences handed out in Saudi Arabia have been offences that are non violent in nature. One such example is the cases of three Saudi Shia boys who sit on death row for participating in pro democracy protest during the Arab Spring. Ali Al Nimr, Dawoud Al Marhoon and Abdullah Al Zaher were all minors during the time they engaged in nonviolent street protest demanding reform.
The use of the death penalty is incompatible with human rights. It undermines human dignity and is inhumane. We call on the Saudi authorities to overturn the death sentences given to Ali, Dawoud and Abdullah and all other political prisoners and to release them immediately  CHRIO Mission Manitoba also calls on all other countries that have not already to abolish the death penalty. #WorldDayAgainstDeathPenalty

Call To Action: Join Our Call On Saudi King Salman To Grant Royal Pardon To Prisoners Ali Al Nimr, Abdullah Al Zaher & Dawoud Al Marhoon In The Spirit Of The Upcoming Muslim Holy Month Of Ramadan.

The Muslim Holy month of Ramadan is fast approaching (begins approx. May 27th). During religious and national holidays the King of Saudi Arabia is known to grant royal pardons to prisoners. This can be an important opportunity to put pressure on Saudi Arabia to release prisoners Ali Al Nimr, Abduallah Al Zaher and Dawoud Al Marhoon who have been sentenced to execution for protesting. Every action taken is important to help gain freedom for these boys. Remember that Saudi Arabia was re elected to the United Nations Human Rights Council late last year. They have an obligation to respect and uphold human rights not only globally but also of its own citizens. This harsh and inhumane punishment given to these boys who were minor at the time of these protest are a clear violation of their human rights and Saudi Arabia must do the right thing and free these boys unconditionally and immediately. Please take action now and share this post.

Information:
Ali Al Nimr, Dawoud Al Marhoon and Abdullah Al Zaher are 3 Shia citizens who were arrested for taking part in protest during the Arab Spring. These are brave boys who took a stand to protest against discrimination and oppression and protested for equality not only for themselves they took a stand for their communities. They were minors at the time of these protest and have been given the most extreme sentences one can imagine. They have been sentenced to be executed for the simple act of protesting. They were tortured and forced into signing false confessions. They have not been given a fair trail and the evidence that was used against them were the confessions extracted during torture.

Other important points to remember, Saudi Arabia is party to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child which prohibits the death sentence for offenses that are committed by those who are under the age of 18. Saudi Arabia is also party to the UN Convention Against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhumane or Degrading Treatment or Punishment. Saudi Arabia is also a member of the UN Human Rights Council. It has an obligation to respect international human rights standards and needs tp comply with its international human rights obligations. The execution of these 3 boys is a clear violation of UNCRC and Saudi Arabia must revoke the death sentences of Ali, Dawoud and Abdullah and free them immediately.

Canadians write to your MP:

Write to them as concerned constituent. Ask them to bring up the case of these 3 boys to our government so they will intervene on humanitarian grounds.
Also remember that Canada has chosen to be economic partners with Saudi Arabia ($15 Billion arms deal) despite the fact that Saudi Arabia has the worst human rights records in the world and the Canadian government should use this a leverage.

Information:
Ali Al Nimr, Dawould Al Marhoon and Abdullah Al Zaher were all under the age of 18 when they took part in protest in the eastern province of Saudi Arabia during the Arab Spring. They have been imprisoned, tortured and sentenced to be beheaded by Saudi Arabia. They took part in protest demanding equal rights and equal opportunities for themselves and for their communities that face discrimination in Saudi Arabia.
Instead of addressing their legitimate demands Saudi Arabia has sentenced them and other protestors to death in order to silence them.
These boys took a stand for their rights and now face death.
